1989 The Year That Changed The World

The most directly significant event of 1989 for all of us here at AKD was the formation of the company by entrepreneur Keith Miller however there were a number of events which took place this year which shaped the world in which we live today.

A World of Change
In 1989 a series of radical political changes occured in the Eastern Bloc, which led to the liberalisation of the Eastern Bloc's authoritatarian systems. Perhaps none more so than the fall of the Berlin Wall.
After several weeks of civil unrest, the East German government announced that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the Berlin Wall, joined by West Germans in celebration.
The Tiananmen Square Protests in Beijing were symbolised by Tank Man. Time magazine included the "unknown rebel" in Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century
Last general election under Aparthied took place in South Africa and the first semi-free elections in Poland instigated by an empowered Solidarity led by Lech Walesa.
Closer to Home
The Hillsborough Disaster, one of the worst tragedies in European Football claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters.
The Poll Tax was introduced to Scotland by Margaret Thatcher
The last ever annual Scotland v England fixture took place at Hampden
Edinburgh should have had three top flight football clubs however Meadowbank Thistle were denied promotion through league reform in 1988. Sadly 25years later there are none in what is now the SPL!
Several current top international footballers were born this year including Welshman Gareth Bale, Englishmen Daniel Sturridge and of course Scotland's very own Barry Bannan.
