AKD 25th Anniversary Golf Day

The AKD 25th Anniversary Challenge took place on Friday 20th June 2014.

After enjoying the fine soup and sandwiches laid on by Prestonfield G.C. the golfing gladiators took to the course. An eclectic mixture of golfing abilities, some well kent faces mixing with new kids on the block at 1pm the battle commenced.

As the sun eventually blazed through the last few clouds some of us wished we had worn shorts like Keith Groom and Nathan (Note: not shorts like theirs - but worn shorts like they did).

By the back 9 a small gap of three or four holes had opened up between the first two groups of sharks and the rest of the floundering pack who were determined to take their time getting back to the clubhouse. One of the beer buggys was duly despatched to the largely static group of former club captains behind us who must have been wondering what was going on.

For the first time we had a few non-golfers at the event who took to the course hitching a lift on the beer buggy and offering such fine banter as "here Dougie, have actually you played golf before today?" or my personal favourite "do you not get tired hitting that ball so often?".

As the crowds gathered on the balcony of the clubhouse enjoying the by now setting sun (we tee'd off at 1pm mind) the last groups trooped off to much applause - even if sounded remarkably like a slow handclap?

When the cards were all in (except Dougie's) and the scores counted, double checked and audited despite the efforts of Keith Miller in picking his own team for the day the results were as follows...

Roll of Honour

  • Nathan Pike  - Best Stableford with a score of 37 points
  • Gavin Cattenach - 2nd place Stableford with less than Nathan
  • Neil Wilkinshaw - Nearest the Pin at the 2nd hole
  • Nathan Pike - Longest drive at the 10th (when it was supposed to be the 11th)
  • Alan Gullan -fittingly Nearest the Pin at the AKD sponsored 13th hole (a valiant effort by David Tod was close)
  • Graeme Anderson, Gavin Cattenach and David Speirs (Team 2) won the Yellow Ball game
  • Jamie Bowes, Drew Westwood and David Tod (Team 5) were 2nd in the Yellow Ball game
  • Drew Westwood won the wooden spoon (now you see why Dougie's card was not submitted)

A nice round £75 was raised by the Three-putting snake game which will be matched by AKD to donate £150 to the Danderhall After school club at their Christmas event. Slightly less than was raised last year in the bunker game so you can all expect the Camels back next year!

Our thanks to Damian and Craig the beer buggy drivers for their excellent customer service in keeping the beers and the mars bars cold on a scorcher of a day.

Most importanly our sincere thanks to all attending who made the day a huge success and our apologies to those who missed it due to varying commitments - we would have preferred you were there, you missed a good one but there's always next year!

It is not the weather that makes a an event great it is the people who attend it!

Til next year,  Slanj!
